TOPIC: near completion..... but....

near completion..... but.... 5 years 5 months ago #26722

its still work in progress, little things to do, but after finishing the odds and bits I still have to find decals to make 'Koninklijke luchtmacht' on the fuselage...

Any suggestions are welcome to make the missing decals. Roundels are taken care fore...

Hi Jan,

That looks nice. :)

A DC3 is something I'd like to build as well, Would you recommend the Italeri one?

for sure Jon!

the cockpit is just enough (you can't see a thing anyway through the little windows, but the freightdoor gives you the option to look inside and you will see the benches for the para's with enough room for personal touches. The kit itself fits very well and the detailing of the surfaces is above standard I think... It even has options for the different engines, used for the skytrain.

I have to drill a big hole in the top of the fuselage though to make the plexi dome look moor realistic..

The Italeri one is good, the Esci even better.

Airfix are boxing the Esci one at the mo and it contains decals for the
BBMF Dak with that winged horse on the nose sides.

Jan for your Koninklije Luchtmacht titling you can do a couple of things.

Give Colin Shipton-Knight a quick e-mail at:

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

or join Britmodeller.com and put up a post explaining what you need
(that picture will be good so that folks can see the size).

Colin will more than likely drop a post in telling you to e-mail at the above
or send him a pm through Britmodeller.

Most of us on there send him our spare "Foreign Airforces" decals because
that's the subjects he's asked for the most,so always has a good stock in
and therefore sends us anything RAF/FAA-wise that we need.

All he asks is that you cover the postage
and that you send him anything spare that you have.

I know I haven't anything in my spares(maybe a few KON.MARINE bits)
otherwise I'd have fixed you up myself.

after a bit of research I found the real X5. Interesting picture, because on the picture you see a POW during the dubious actions the former Dutch New Guinee. The X5 in the museum I am building is a mock up. Originally bought from the portuguese I believe. Special attention for Koninklijke Luchtmacht. The font is typical fifties I guess...

From that pic you can tell the aircraft was built as a genuine C-47 and not a DC-3.
What you see is one half of the freight door open, the parachute door was contained
within that door(the part that's open became it's frame)and opens inwards.

It looks like you've modelled the half freight door open mate,so what you see in the
black and white picture is what you should show with your's

And if you're having the half freight door open Jan you've just got to put that notice inside it
and model those aluminium steps that clip onto the lower door sill!!!.

Mark,

The Italeri-kit is sold as a C-47D... but the one in the museum is altered from top till toe. The original aerial isn't there, the font on the fuselage differs etc etc... there are many mock ups in the museum like the Breguet Atlantique. This version never flew with the Dutch navy...

Ah,you see Jan,these are the pitfalls of modelling museum examples of any kite.

Ask Richie how much time we both spend researching our subjects before we commit glue to plastic.

Fire that B&W pic to Colin to give him a better update of what you're looking for.

Mark,

Will do, I have another one of the original X5 during a sad ceremony. Three corpses transported out of the jungle to the main airfield of New Guinee to be transported back home...

According to my notes - X5 had the construction number 33323/16575 and was previously K32 with the Belgian Air Force. Ex 44-76991 and KN636 with the RAF, it later served with the Dutch Navy as MLD 019 before being sold off as XV-NIK in December 1962.

cheers for this info!!! The mock up X5 played a flying part in A Bridge too Far before it was grounded.. its now in bits and pieces, being restored...

from reliable sources I heard that a great deal of all stock from the museum is being sold, including a few spares from the C-47 on display..

I didn't still and did send Colin a mail, who promptly gave me a reply with following pictures as a result. Colin helped me out a lot. But did forget to send his adress, so I can send him some unused decals back.

Mark,

I will work on that step! don't know how, paper, thin plastic- or metalsheet, I will go through the shops and see what I can get... Still figuring out if I can do the wiring of the C-47D, its a bit complex...
