Some years ago,I bought a Pegasus Supermarine Spiteful F.14.

A short run kit,all thick sprues and mouldings, but not bad
on shape and dimensions.
I only paid £2 for it,thinking back then that I could do a Seafang from it.

The biggest problem was the Seafangs's long carb intake, reminicent of
a Seafire 47's.
So having bought that lovely resin Seafire 47 t'other week which made the
Rareplane vacform of one I have redundant, thoughts turned to the Seafang
again, utilizing the Seafire 47's carb intake and the Aeroclub contra prop I bought
for it too.

It'll be done as VB895,the second prototype and the airframe built as
the first true Seafang F.32 with a sting hook and folding wings.

Only 16 Seafangs were ever built,10 Mk 31's and 6 Mk.32's.
Apart from VB895 that was taken on charge briefly by 778 NTU at Ford, all the rest were scrapped in their packing crates.
A sad end to a fabulous type, the very, very last expression of design that had
started in the 1930's,only eclipsed in fighter performance by the Vampire and Meteor.

The only Spiteful F XVI(RB518) built is believed to hold the British airspeed record for
piston engined aircraft,a staggering 494mph straight and level.

Love the Seafang. Was it Mike Lithgow that called it a 'Spitfire too far'?
You mentioned the Aeroclub contra-prop. Is that the one with the resin FR.47 nose? That ones quite good, and a bit of epoxy putty'll get the shape right. I used the Aeroclub conversion with a Heller Mk.XIV fuesalage, FROG MkXVIX wings, a Falcon canopy, lots of putty, card and sand paper to do a FR.47. 'Course, the next year Minicraft started pooping out Late griffon Spits in every variant under the sun, but there is a bit more satisfaction in doing it the hard way! Like getting a decent Attacker or Gannet out of the old FROG croakers. (....standing up in a canoe!)

Yeh it was Mike Lithgow.

The Aeroclub Rotol contra-prop was originally done to fit the Rareplane vac
or the Pegasus Seafire 47.
It is very good, done in whitemetal, but it doesn't come with a resin nose.

Cooper details did a very good set to suit the Airfix Spit F.22/24 and
Seafire 46/47 kits.
That comprised of a resin nose and cockpit, the kit items are either not quite right or
a bit sparse.

Personally,I'd avoid the Academy/Minicraft Griffon Spits/Seafires like the
plague.
Both the 1/72nd and 1/48th scale ones suffer from being too tubby from the
rear cockpit frame forward.
They look ok on their own,but when placed next to another maker's
the tubby fuselage stands out a mile.
Shame really because the cockpit, prop and undercart are pretty good.

Blimey, you really went the long way around to get a 47.
The Heller XVI is quite nice,it's e wing is particularly good.
How did you get the later F.21 wing out of the original wing in the
Frog XIV kit though?

The F.21 wing as fitted to the Spit F.21/22/24 and Seafire 45/46/47 series
was a different animal to the original elliptical wing, being built up on
six torsion boxes and featuring broader tips,a bit more span and less of an
ellipse than the original.

Yeah you're right about getting a good model out of the old Frog kits,
but very often they're the only way.
I bashed a decent Gannet and Barra from 'em a few years ago,and
I still prefer Frog's Sea Vixen to that Xtrakit monster.

Look for the Aeroclub FR.47 conversion. The nose is perfect, prop and spinner great. I think it had a canopy set, but for some reason I used the Falcon. It was the long way around, but 18 years ago,it was the only way to go. The Frog wing came about as I had a whole bunch around, the (NOVO) plastic is soft and easy to work, and the wing seemed to be over sized and very thick, and so could be cut ,filed and sanded to the right shape and profile. The fin and rudder were sheet styrene and putty, and the stab from the Heller kit with sheet styrene plugs, and more putty and filing and....
I think the recipe was with the Aeroclub conversion kit, more or less. Had some very nice 1/72 scale plan and profile drawing to assist in getting everthing to the right shape. The resin nose just fit like a glove, if you got the inital carving right.
Tough going with the FROGS. 15 years later the Barra stillonly has one wing and the center fuesalage and cockpit done, but I had to be ambitious(DUMB) and do a working wing fold. All that exposed warren truss!
Still not as bad as the re-manufacturing needed to get an acceptable Be-6 out of that VEB Plastikart rubbish!

Trumpeter do a nice selection of FAA aircraft in both 1/72nd and 1/48th . The 1/72nd Wyvern and Gannets are particulary good. The 1/48th Wyvern and Seahawks are excellent value for money.

But as they are made in China you'll want to make another one half an hour later.

The Trumpeter Wyvern is superb. For 1/72 scale the Revell Germany Gannet is the one to beat. Just perfection.

Got the Trumpy Gannet T.2.
I've eyed up their Wyvern many times, but I've a well done
Frog one in my collection that I don't want to retire really.

Might get a Revell Gannet one of these days to do as a COD 4.

Ahh, the depths of our depravity! My Leibensgefertine finds me at least once a week, shivering in a ball under the basement stair, covered in powdered styrene; muttering '...FROG...FROG...FROG...'
