I have been test flying the Hornet series to get the basic data in FSX, actual in-sim ranges, payload etc and one of the things I note is, of course, fuel burn.

This has been unusually high in the F20.

At full payload (i.e. MTOW) with full fuel, I get the following results:

F.1 = 2230 pph
F.3 = 2240 pph
NF21 = 2069 pph
F20 = 5998 pph!!

They all have differing amounts of max fuel, but the same max weight - which is fine, as they are different variants, but the F.20 runs out of fuel after just 39 minutes! I've tried it on 3 flights to make sure the data was right. I keep the boost within the green range asap after take off.

Maybe a figure error slipped in there somewhere?

Just had a quick look at the aircraft config files and although it is noted that this version carries less fuel:



I think the amount less listed in the fuel data is a bit much:

Is this the cause, perhaps?

Have you tried the Alternative Hornet FDE sets available here in the Other section in the Library or do a search on avsim using ruscoe as the search keyword

WOW!!.

That really is a greedy brute.

I don't have FSX JD,so I can't try it for myself,but with a two speed two stage Merlin I usually
budget for about 40-45 gph max(Spit IX/XVI with a 60-70 series driving a 4 blade Rotol).

Of course,it's all relative to power/pitch/mixture/rad shutter settings,but that's with warm up,
,mag checks, t/o,1 hour-ish transit to venue,10 minute display slot,circuit and landing.

A Lanc will easily use a bit less than 200gph if you handle it correctly,I know that's with
Merlin XX series engines(two speed single stage blowers),but she's a big heavy old girl
that can be flown with quite a bit of flair.

JD_LincsUK, fuel burn is adjusted by fiddling with fuel_flow_scalar= in the aircraft.cfg , decreasing the number reduces fuel burn

Yeah, I'd guessed as much, but I must admit, I've never seen any setting other than '1' - and that's what these are set to as well.

I was thinking that the main issue in this case was that the fuel amount set in the F20 was only about half that in the others, so didn't need to mess with the other settings.

It will be useful to know for the future, mind. It would also be nice to know what '1' refers to!

I guess adjust, test, readjust will be the order of the day.

The alternative aircraft.cfg's are not set to 1 in fuel flow entry the 3 models have different entries to reflect 3 different ranges.

1 is I believe a Fs default fuel burn as that figure is a scalar of the default, 1 being the datum add to it burn goes up subtract and it goes down.

Did you actually try the alternative FDE's ?? not much adjusting needed there

Yes I did test the other configs and they are better.

As the F.1 model wasn't included I adjusted that myself and it now seems about right - though only in fuel burn - I would have to do further research to see if the total fuel amount is correct. One sort of assumes that the model developer will get that sort of thing right from their own research, though I know that isn't always the case, even on some payware models (no names... )

The F1 was not included because it was not released or modeled at that time, the airfile from the F20 could be used on the F1 same with aircraft.cfg since the F20 is basically a F1 with a bit of extra weight due to tail hook and wing fold gear.

Rest assured a lot of research was carried out with the limited references available ignoring Wiki there is a set of pilots notes for the F20 in the library along with a profile for the Hornet all Mks which I chose to use.
